Description
Breast Imaging Fellowship
University of Rochester Medicine | Department of Imaging Sciences | Rochester, New York
Build your expertise. Find your community. Begin your next chapter in breast imaging.
The Breast Imaging Fellowship at University of Rochester Medicine is seeking a Breast Imaging Fellow for the 2027–2028 academic year. Fellows can expect a comprehensive year of advanced training in a collaborative, academically focused environment, with broad clinical and procedural experience, individualized mentorship, and opportunities to engage in education, research, quality improvement, and multidisciplinary patient care.
As a fellow, you will work alongside experienced breast imaging faculty while caring for a diverse patient population across the spectrum of breast disease. Through progressive responsibility, hands-on experience, and dedicated teaching, you will develop the clinical judgment, procedural skills, and confidence needed to practice as an independent breast imaging specialist.
Our goal is simple: to provide an educational experience that prepares you not only for your first position after fellowship, but for a rewarding career in breast imaging.
Why Choose the University of Rochester?
Comprehensive Clinical Experience
- Our fellowship provides exposure to the full spectrum of contemporary breast imaging, including:
- Screening and diagnostic mammography
- Digital breast tomosynthesis
- Breast ultrasound
- Breast MRI
- Contrast-enhanced breast imaging
- High-risk screening and risk assessment
- Evaluation of benign and malignant breast disease
- Image-guided breast procedures
Fellows gain hands-on experience with a broad range of image-guided interventions, including:
- Ultrasound-guided breast biopsy
- Stereotactic and tomosynthesis-guided biopsy
- MRI-guided breast biopsy
- Contrast-enhanced mammography-guided biopsy and localization
- Breast localization procedures
- Other image-guided procedures performed within the section
Our practice performs nearly 60,000 breast imaging studies annually, including nearly 1,000 breast MRI examinations and more than 400 image-guided biopsies each year. Fellows gain experience with contrast-enhanced mammography, supported by two dedicated contrast-enhanced mammography units, as well as MRI-guided biopsies and other advanced breast imaging procedures.
This breadth of clinical experience provides fellows with a strong balance of screening, diagnostic imaging, procedures, consultation, and multidisciplinary patient care.
Progressive Autonomy & Individualized Mentorship
We believe fellows learn best when they are given meaningful responsibility while having experienced faculty available to support and guide them.
Throughout the year, fellows develop increasing independence in image interpretation, patient management, procedures, and clinical decision-making. Faculty provide individualized teaching and feedback, helping each fellow identify areas for growth and build confidence as an independent breast imager.
At University of Rochester Medicine, a National Cancer Institute-designed cancer center, fellows work closely with a nationally recognized breast imaging faculty with expertise spanning clinical breast imaging, education, quality improvement, breast MRI, image-guided intervention, and breast cancer research.
With eight full-time breast imaging faculty and up to three fellows per year, fellows have meaningful access to faculty mentorship while benefiting from a range of clinical perspectives, areas of expertise, and teaching styles.
Multidisciplinary Breast Care
Breast imaging is an integral part of comprehensive breast care at the University of Rochester. Fellows participate in weekly multidisciplinary breast conferences and work closely with breast surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, genetic counselors, pathologists, and other members of the breast care team. These experiences provide fellows with a deeper understanding of how imaging findings influence diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing patient care.
Fellows also spend several weeks rotating through related specialties, working alongside leaders in these disciplines and gaining a broader perspective on the multidisciplinary care of patients with breast disease.
Education & Teaching
Education is central to the mission of the Department of Imaging Sciences. Fellows receive dedicated teaching throughout the year and participate in the educational environment of a major academic medical center. Opportunities include:
- Teaching residents and medical students
- Participating in resident and fellow conferences
- Presenting cases at multidisciplinary conferences
- Engaging in breast imaging education initiatives
- Developing consultation and communication skills
- Participating in quality improvement activities
Fellows become an important part of the educational community while continuing to develop their own expertise.
