Position currently serves two academic roles within VA and the University of Washington: 1. As Track Director, assists the Idaho/UW Advanced Clinician Program Director in Seattle in accomplishing the goals of the Psychiatry Residency Training Track in Boise, ID both at the VA clinical site and at a broader, program-wide level. 2. In the role of Program Director, is responsible for every aspect of the UW Boise Psychiatry Residency training program including resident recruitment. To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: 3 years post residency clinical psychiatric experience and experience in administrative and clinical leadership in psychiatric training programs. Familiarity with VA operation and Electronic Medical Record is helpful. Ability to work with multiple stakeholders from multiple health care systems, as well as governing bodies and state legislature is crucial as is a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Conducts history and physical exams, mental status exams, work ups, diagnostic assessments, and provides treatment in light of biological, psychological, behavioral, and social factors to patients the age of 18 and older who suffer from mental, behavioral, or emotional disorders. Collaborates with a multidisciplinary treatment team both clinically and administratively. Provides education and counseling of patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, and use of prescribed treatments and medications, when appropriate. Orders and takes appropriate action for all necessary laboratory tests, electrocardiograms (EKG), radiologic assessments, and other clinical tests. Provides consultation to medical/surgical providers in outpatient and inpatient settings. Initiates consults and referrals as clinically indicated. Provides ongoing outpatient and inpatient care (psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy as indicated in the treatment plan) for assigned patients. Completes appropriate clinical reminders, suicide risk assessments, and timely documentation of patient encounters. Program/Training Director duties Is responsible for every aspect of the UW Boise Psychiatry Residency training program including resident recruitment, didactic and curriculum development, resident and faculty supervision and evaluation, program licensure and accreditation, and fostering relationships with community and state partners. Provides direct resident supervision and must maintain a clear focus on the professional development of trainees and faculty while navigating among a broad variety of institutional settings. Ensures that all aspects of residency training conform to the requirements for psychiatry residency training as put forth from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and to University of Washington Psychiatry Residency requirements, policies, and procedures. Understands and ensures adherence to all VA, Community Hospital, and State policies and procedures. Ensures appropriate resident training and evaluation. Responsible for clinical rotation development and ongoing improvement. Monitors clinical rotations by on-site observation, supervising residents, collaborating with faculty, and/or participating in meetings of faculty and residents to discuss and evaluate educational experiences at the site. Continually evaluates and oversees weekly didactic curriculum. Oversees all aspects of resident recruitment. Oversees all aspects of faculty recruitment, development, and retention. In a matrix model of supervision, oversees residency administrative staff, Associate Program Director, and other psychiatrists with FTE dedicated to resident training. Supports VA and Community Faculty Provides faculty oversight, training, mentoring, and supervision monitoring. Promotes an education culture with the VA staff and in the Community.
