Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana-Champaign, Illinois
Job Summary Carle Foundation Hospital has partnered with the University of Illinois to create the Carle Illinois College of Medicine, which uniquely focuses on integrating engineering principles into medical education. As a result of this partnership, Carle is making significant investments in new research programs, scientists and clinician researchers, particularly in the area of medical imaging. Carle is seeking a founding Director for a new Clinical Imaging Research Center in the Department of Radiology. The Center will be a focal point for development of novel imaging solutions for clinical challenges. The Director will have responsibility for recruitment of junior scientist and clinician scientist faculty in the Center and will guide investment in new research imaging equipment.
Carle has active clinical research and collaborations in areas such as; neuroscience, oncology, cardiovascular health and rural health, with a significant focus on MRI. The Director will be expected to develop or continue a strong externally-funded medical imaging research program in an area that complements our clinical interests. Individuals with expertise in MR imaging, personalized medical imaging or imaging informatics are of most interest, but candidates with strong track records in other areas of clinical imaging will be considered. In addition to resources at Carle, the Director will have the opportunity to collaborate with researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, located a few blocks from Carle. Multiple internal funding mechanisms are available to initiate collaboration between Carle and Illinois. Current MRI Facilities at Carle include six MRI systems (1.5 and 3 T GE and Siemens). Reserved scan time for research is available on these systems, but it is anticipated that a new research-dedicated MRI system will form part of the start-up package for the Director.
Previous Experience and Requirements Candidates must have a PhD, MD, MD/PhD or equivalent degree. It is expected that qualified applicants will have a demonstrated track record (e.g. strong peer-reviewed publications and external funding) in medical imaging with a specific emphasis on clinically based methodologies. The new Director is expected to establish an independent externally-funded research program, and to participate where appropriate in the new College of Medicine. Responsibilities will involve translation of basic research into improved clinical practice, as well as supervision of postdocs, scientific staff and medical residents.
